Cordyceps sinensis (Dongchonxiacao, housenice čínská, Caterpillar mushroom, Ophiocordyceps sinensis) patří do rodu cordyceps, kam se řadí i Cordyceps militaris, Cordyceps liangshamensis, Cordyceps gunnii aj. (je objeveno téměř 700 druhů), jedná se o vřeckovýtrusnou jedlou parazitickou houbu. Její spory se uchytí na površích larev hmyzu a následně vyplní celou schránku svým sklerociem, ze kterého pak vyroste zralá houba. Cordyceps roste v nadmořských výškách nad cca 3500 metrů, a to hlavně v horách Tibetu, v čínských provinciích Sichuan, Yunnan atd. Houba se sbírá v období od dubna do srpna. Ve volné přírodě je však již málo k nalezení. Dle všeho během 25 posledních let poklesl výskyt o 90 %, což samozřejmě zvýšilo její hodnotu na trhu, a proto se tato houba pěstuje i uměle. Poptávka po Cordycepsu je dána hlavně jeho účinky na lidské zdraví. Sílu Cordycepsu po tisíce let využívá tradiční čínská a tibetská medicína. Existují příběhy, které popisují, jak pasáci yaků vypozorovali na zvířatech změnu, pokud spásali Cordyceps. Zvířata byla vitálnější, silnější, zdravější i potentnější. Psané záznamy pak můžeme vystopovat až do roku 620 n. l. Západnímu světu je Cordyceps znám až od roku 1726, kdy byl představen na mykologické konferenci v Paříži. Tehdy ale západní svět neměl o účincích Cordycepsu ponětí. To se však změnilo, byť mnohem později, i díky tomu, že v roce 1964 byl Cordyceps oficiálně zapsán mezi rostlinná léčiva do čínské farmakologie.
